CAPSELLA Project – Newsletter n. 03/17
The CAPSELLA Consortium (Collective Awareness PlatformS for Environmentally-sound Land management based on data technoLogies and Agrobiodiversity) has been very busy in the past months. Among others, we have shaped out the FIELD & SEED pilots. In this newsletter we present you where they will be run.
Of course, CAPSELLA is also organising other stimulating events such as our third CAPSELLA workshop in Italy near Venice, the second hackathon in Montepellier and the Open Data Workshop in Crete. Enjoy the read!
ACTIVITIES
CAPSELLA & DIVERSIFOOD Meeting outcome
The H2020 projects CAPSELLA and DIVERSIFOOD, both working on issues related to agrobiodiversity and food, met in Pisa to discuss how the European seed networks could benefit and be supported by ICT tools, especially the ones that will be developed in the frame of CAPSELLA.
The meeting was enriched by the active participation of a truly large European networks representation including seeds experts and savers such as PRO SPECIE RARA from Switzerland, ARCHE NOAH from Austria, Red de Semillas Andaluz from Spain, Aegilops from Greece and the U.K – Garden Organic who presented their national experience and databases.
Experts from France INRA and CIRAD contributed to a stimulated discussion on the development of an IT tool for agrobiodiversity data collection.
To this end, the seeds networks agreed on the importance of having a simple, common data model for data entry possibly with high scalability and interoperability.
The CAPSELLA Coordination Team acknowledged the request and commits itself to the release of a data entry tool. With regards the model, it will be evaluated by the ICT experts in CAPSELLA on the base of concrete seeds communities needs and requirements.
CAPSELLA Open Data Workshop
The project organizes an open workshop with presentations about global agri-food data initiatives & networks.
The workshop will be held in Chania on Friday June the 2nd 2017 in conjunction with the Open Harvest 2017 event and it will open with a keynote speech from Paul Stacey, Associate Director of Global Learning in Creative Commons (https://creativecommons.org/author/ … mmons-org/).
The scope of this workshop is to connect the project activities with global open agri-food data initiatives and networks. Moreover, during the workshop a panel is being planned entitled: “From global challenges to local ones: Linking Communities around the world”, where the panelists will discuss with workshop’s participants about how agricultural innovation and open data can facilitate connecting global/grand challenges (such as feeding the increasing population of the planet) with local (coming from farmers’ communities) challenges.
Presentations will be provided among others by repre-sentatives from French National Agronomic Institute (INRA), Wageningen University & Research (WUR), the CGIAR, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), the Indian Statistical Institute, CABI, University of Guelph and Global Open Data in Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN). Further information and the full programme will be available at the CAPSELLA Project web-site: http://www.

CAPSELLA two Hands on Farm Meetings – Join us in Peccioli (Tuscany) at the Floriddia Organic Farm on June 9th-11th and in Santa Maria di Sala (Venice) on June 26th-27th 2017NETWORK
The Rete Semi Rurali and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, with the support of the ZEPHYR Team, will not only spread the word about the CAPSELLA’s FIELD & SEEDS pilots but will take advantage of two upcoming meetings organised respectively in Peccioli, Tuscany and near Venice to run the FIELD pilot demonstrator. Specifically on June 26th & 27th in Santa Maria di Sala (Venice), thanks to the host network ESAPODA, the Sant’Anna Team will present the pilot on Soil Health. This tailor-made, innovative web-app will integrate modeling of experimental data together with participatory assessments by the farmers to forecast the effect of fertilization on soil health and therefore on the sustainability of the production.
On the 9th -11th June 2017, Rete Semi Rurali will be presenting the SEED pilot during this organic event that will gather over 1,000 organic farmers and seeds networks and Guardians from all over Europe.
During these events, CAPSELLA will shoot two videos about the pilots that shall be available for massive dissemination by the end of September. Stay tuned!
Last but not least, CAPSELLA welcomes farmers, organic networks, clusters from all over Europe to contact us and find out more about the Soil Health open App/software and test it for free.
CAPSELLA 2nd Hackathon
The 2nd CAPSELLA hackathon will join forces with the 2nd Agrohackathon (https://www.meetup.com/AgroHackatho … 236852702/), which takes place in Montpellier on 1-2 July 2017 just before the landmark conference for ICT in agriculture, namely the EFITA 2017 Conference (http://www.efita2017.org/). Calls for participation are open for hackers, developers or startup companies, who are interested in solving technical challenges in the field of agro-biodiversity. Registering for the 2nd Agrohackathon and consequently for the 2nd CAPSELLA hackathon is a 3 step process, namely: (a) register into the Meetup platform (https://secure.meetup.com/register/), (b) register to the MeetUp group. You will have to fill out a few questions (www.meetup.com/agrohackathon), (c) register to the specific event (https://www.meetup.com/AgroHackatho … 236852702/).
The participants will work on three main abstract challenges, namely: (a) developing apps that facilitate the optimization of compost effect with precision agriculture techniques, (b) developing apps for supporting farmers in performing assessment of soil health and analyzing the impact of farming practices in soil fertility dynamics and (c) developing apps for handling data coming from on-farm experimental fields managed by seeds networks. CAPSELLA Platform Services (https://ticketing.madgik.di.uoa.gr/ … m_Services) will be used for addressing these challenges.
Do not miss this exciting opportunity and join the 2nd CAPSELLA Hackathon and contribute solving real challenges and problems that are being faced by local communities in the field of agro-biodiversity with the use of different sources of open data. Further information coming soon on the project’s website (http://www.capsella.eu/2nd-hackathon/)
